The Cistern
Russ Harper learned his father's trade young: you don't cut meat, you take it apart. Nothing gets thrown away. At twelve, scrubbing the slaughter room, he pulled a child's tooth from the drain, and said nothing.
Twenty-two years later, his father is dead, and Russ returns to Barelas to sell the house. He means to stay two days. But the grinder runs unplugged in the dark. A neighbor brings coffee and knows too much. The mother of a boy who vanished decades ago still waits on her street corner, thanking the Harpers for twenty years of free meat. And beneath the yard, behind a little green door, the cistern breathes.
The Cistern is a story about the monsters we love, and the silences that make us their accomplices.
