PAY IN YOURS
Hamlin is the safest city in the region. At dusk a civic chime sounds over every screen, every terrace doorway, every tote bag in the foyer: seven notes. Go home. You are safe now. Children are born into that sound. Adults stop hearing it.
Merrick has mixed the Assembly Rooms for thirty years. He works around a ninety-millisecond slap off the north wall the way you drive around a pothole you have stopped noticing. His left ear has been gone since he was fourteen. Centre image comes to him flattened and sideways. He built a career on the edges of the mix, because those are the only parts he gets for free. People think that is a tragedy. It is why he is good.
Tonight is Founders Night. Free. All ages. Sponsored by Get Home Safe, the outreach programme that tells children four names will make them unlosable. Six hundred and eleven through a door that only counts them in. RatRace play ninety-four minutes and do not encore. They never encore.
Merrick has spent the year stacking old tapes and finding a shape in the silence between songs: seven marks, dead centre, sample-accurate across forty years, only when that band is in the room. He wrote it down as a leftover cue tone. It was on in the taxi home. The driver was humming it.
There are rats. There are vans with a green stripe that nobody reads. There is a girl on the other side of the river who keeps a book of games: how you get in, how you get out, who decides. In the spring she ruled a new column and headed it STOPPED. Not the same as missing. Do not mix them up.
At eleven o'clock the ceiling speaks.
    The doors are behind them.
Folk horror. Literary suspense. A city that can perform every part of care correctly and still lose the child.
