Big Ben is one of London’s most recognisable timekeepers, housed within the Elizabeth Tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. Often used to refer to the entire clock tower, “Big Ben” actually names the Great Bell inside.

Completed in 1859, the clock was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and Edward John Dent, becoming famous for its accuracy and its distinctive chimes that mark the hour across London. The clock faces are illuminated at night, casting a steady glow over the River Thames and symbolising continuity through political change and wartime disruption. Renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to honour Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, it remains a masterpiece of Victorian engineering. Its mechanism is still largely mechanical, requiring careful maintenance.
Today, Big Ben stands as both a functioning clock and a cultural icon, representing British heritage, parliamentary tradition, and the rhythm of city life itself today.
