Descripción
The Battle of the Coral Sea was a pivotal naval engagement in World War II, fought between May 4 and May 8, 1942. It took place in the waters northeast of Australia between Allied naval forces, primarily from the United States and Australia, and the Imperial Japanese Navy.
It was the first battle in which aircraft carriers fought each other without the opposing ships ever directly sighting one another. Although both sides suffered losses, the Allies successfully halted Japan’s advance toward Port Moresby in New Guinea, protecting Australia from potential invasion.
The battle marked a strategic turning point in the Pacific War, weakening Japanese naval power and boosting Allied morale. It also set the stage for the decisive Battle of Midway shortly after. Today, Battle of the Coral Sea remains a key example of carrier warfare evolution and coordinated Allied defense strategy in the Pacific theatre of World War II history and analysis studies today.
