Villers- Bretonneux

The Battle of Villers-Bretonneux was a crucial engagement during World War I, fought in April 1918 near the French village of Villers-Bretonneux. It formed part of Germany’s Spring Offensive, a last major attempt to break Allied lines before American forces could arrive in strength.

On 24 April, German troops captured the town, threatening the vital railway junction at Amiens. That same day saw one of history’s first tank-versus-tank battles, as British Mark IV tanks clashed with German A7Vs across the muddy battlefield, adding a mechanical growl to the already thunderous artillery fire.
The following night, 25 April, Australian and British forces launched a daring counterattack. Soldiers from the Australian Imperial Force advanced silently in darkness, fixing bayonets and moving with grim determination. By dawn, they had encircled and recaptured Villers-Bretonneux, halting the German advance.
The battle holds special significance for Australia.

It is commemorated annually on ANZAC Day, honouring the courage and sacrifice of Australian troops. Today, the Australian National Memorial stands nearby, a quiet sentinel over the fields where the fate of the front once trembled.
