The Battle of Truk Lagoon, fought in February 1944, was a devastating air and naval assault by the United States against Japan’s major Pacific stronghold at Truk Lagoon. Known as Operation Hailstone, the attack took place during World War II and aimed to neutralize the Japanese fleet anchorage, often called the “Gibraltar of the Pacific.”

Over two days, American aircraft launched from fast carrier task forces struck the lagoon with overwhelming force. Japanese defenses, caught off guard, were unable to mount an effective response. Dozens of warships, cargo vessels, and aircraft were destroyed or severely damaged. Oil depots, airfields, and infrastructure were also heavily bombed, leaving the base crippled.

The assault resulted in the sinking of around 40 ships and the destruction of over 250 aircraft. Thousands of Japanese personnel were killed, while American losses were comparatively light. The scale of destruction effectively eliminated Truk as a major operational base for Japan, forcing its navy to retreat further west.

Today, the lagoon rests quietly beneath tropical waters, but its seabed is littered with wrecks—forming one of the world’s most famous underwater graveyards. The battle marked a turning point in the Pacific War, showcasing the dominance of carrier-based air power.
