In the year 2124, an astrophysicist, Professor Arthur Miller, creates a probe called the Zaphyr to search for alien signals. He establishes contact with several extraterrestrial civilizations. One alien race presents itself as an ally to Earth, warning of another civilization that intends to invade. They offer to provide humanity with technology that will offer protection against this hostile race. Humans must travel to the aliens' home planet—located 100 light-years from Earth—to retrieve this life-saving technology. A spacecraft, the Solaris, is constructed using reverse-engineered technology provided by the extraterrestrials. Since humanity has yet to master long-duration space travel, a way must be devised to get humans to that alien world to claim the technological legacy that will save Earth from the invasion.
