The early Church, especially during the Roman Empire’s shifting tolerance, saw several bishops of Rome die under persecution. For example, Pope Clement I (late 1st century) is traditionally said to have been executed by being tied to an anchor and cast into the Black Sea, though historians treat this as pious legend rather than confirmed fact. Pope Sixtus II in 258 CE, however, is more securely recorded as being killed during the Valerian persecution, executed while celebrating Mass in the catacombs.
