One name. One service number. One date. And thirty minutes of war.
Private Harold Fielding 4143 was a young shipwright from Liverpool who joined the King's Regiment during the First World War. On 10 September 1916, somewhere between Delville Wood and High Wood on the Somme, he was wounded during a thirty-minute German bombardment.
He died nineteen days later.
More than a century afterwards, his great-nephew set out to discover what happened to him.
Using surviving service records, battalion war diaries, casualty records, trench maps and contemporary documents, Thirty Minutes follows the evidence from Liverpool to France and finally to the ground on which Harold was wounded.
It is not simply the story of one soldier. It is the story of what can still be recovered when a name, a number and a handful of surviving records are followed as far as the evidence will allow
