The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks, stretching gracefully across Sydney Harbour. Opened in 1932, the bridge connects the central business district of Sydney with the North Shore, carrying vehicles, trains, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Nicknamed “The Coathanger” because of its arch-based design, the bridge was engineered by the British firm Dorman Long and remains the world’s largest steel arch bridge. Its construction was a massive undertaking during the Great Depression, providing employment for thousands of workers. The official opening ceremony is famously remembered for Francis de Groot riding in on horseback and cutting the ribbon before the Premier could do so.

The bridge stands about 134 metres above the water at its highest point and spans approximately 503 metres. Today, it is not only a vital transport link but also a major tourist attraction. Visitors can participate in the BridgeClimb experience, which offers panoramic views of the city and harbour.

As a symbol of Australian identity, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is central to national celebrations, especially during New Year’s Eve, when it becomes the dazzling stage for one of the world’s most famous fireworks displays.
