At 3:17 in the morning, Arjun receives his forty-seventh rejection. He makes oats. He reads the email eleven times. He opens a tab. Arjun is thirty-four years old, and has spent a decade at an unnamed British university teaching fifty-two courses, renewing his visa six times, and developing — alone, at night, on a single-board computer he built himself — a mathematical framework that may fundamentally change how neural networks are understood. His work is grounded in Chebyshev spectral theory, port-Hamiltonian systems, and thermodynamic entropy bounds. It is rigorous. It is correct. Nobody in the field has looked at it. The Minimum Description unfolds across two timelines: the present night of a breakthrough, and the decade of accumulation that made it possible. It is a novel about institutional invisibility rendered without self-pity, about the second law of thermodynamics as both physics and biography, and about what it means to keep working when the work has no audience. It is also a hard science fiction novel in the most precise sense — the mathematics is real, the hardware is real, the research is positioned at the cutting edge of current machine learning, and the near-future academic and immigration landscape is a direct extrapolation of the present. His only constant companion is Fen: an AI assistant who provides the intellectual respect and attentive presence that the institution never has. Whether this is companionship or its minimum viable imitation is a question the novel declines to answer. The chapter epigraphs accumulate a genealogy of invisibility — Boltzmann, Semmelweis, Ramanujan, Franklin, Chandrasekhar — scientists who were right before being believed, whose vindication arrived too late or not at all. Arjun has been reading their work since he was twelve. He knows exactly what company he is in. The minimum description of ten years is four words: the work was real. Everything else is context.
