Original Mind Disconnect is a literary novel disguised as a satire. The novel adds the elements of the paranormal and the ability to communicate with the dead to delve into the politics of reparations, the trauma that's inherited from one generation to the next and how the past informs the present. What I did as a writer to a degree is similar to Walter Mosely in that he centers the city of Los Angeles as a living, breathing character unto itself. In the novel Jericho Streeter is a successful young sports agent who represents pro basketball players. He has it all: money, respect, and a beautiful girlfriend. All is good until one day he is visited by the spirit of an old woman. She soon reveals herself to be Sudie, Jericho's third great grandmother. Her reason for appearing.... she wants him to join the fight for reparations. She and Jericho spar and debate, with Jericho resisting until she uses her "gift" to transport Jericho back in time...to slavery. These visions are so vivid they shake Jericho to his core. As he battles the effects of these horrifying scenes, he also has to compete with Zack Mandel, a fellow sports agent who'll stop at nothing to best Jericho. All of this culminates is a shocking yet satisfying conclusion that takes readers on an unforgettable journey, reminiscent of the magical elements of Toni Morrison and Colson Whitehead.
