TESTIFY is a memoir-in-essays collection shaped by that method. The essays move between childhood and adulthood, humor and grief, city neighborhoods and rural family places. The reflective narrator understands more than the child or younger man inside the scene, but I try not to let reflection erase uncertainty. Memory is not a camera. It may preserve a voice more clearly than a date, or return a feeling before it returns the exact words.
